Delhi government is considering a proposal to crackdown on grossly polluting vehicles in the city wherein heavy fine amounting to 2,000 rupees may be imposed on the spot. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that her government is concerned about the reported pollution level in the city and occurrence of dense smog during the past week over the Capital city. Mrs Dikshit discussed the issue of air pollution in Delhi threadbare on the eve of Diwali with chairman of Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, Bhure Lal and other concerned agencies. She said, Delhi Cabinet while taking note of it, also expressed its concern and decided to get a study conducted by IIT Kanpur and the experts from Meteorological Department in this regard. In the meeting, it was suggested that the city government must go for crackdown on grossly polluting vehicles. A proposal to this effect would be placed before the Cabinet soon. It was also suggested that the stringent action including fine may at least be charged during the next three months of winter season. The meeting also called for setting up check posts on Delhi’s entry points on borders with the states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. For long term measures, Delhi Government also instructed the concerned departments to chalk out a detailed action plan in tune with the climate change agenda of the government
