  • Demonstrators in Italy urge Berlusconi to resign

    Published on February 13, 2011

Hundreds of demonstrators attended rallies in the Italian capital, Rome, and in the northern city of Milan yesterday to urge embattled Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to resign. Protesters in both cities carried pots and pans, banging them as they marched through the cities. The rallies came at the end of a week that saw prosecutors in Milan request an immediate trial of the 74-year-old Prime Minister for allegedly paying an underage prostitute for sex and using his power to cover it up. Mr. Berlusconi criticized the prosecutors’ efforts and denied any wrongdoing. He said the Milan magistrates are pursuing a political vendetta against him, adding he has no intention of resigning over the allegations. Prostitution is legal in Italy, but not with people younger than 18.
