Gurgaon : In a difficult surgical procedure, doctors at multi-specialty Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon have successfully removed a massive tumor weighing 4.5 kg from the ovary of a woman who was carrying it for two years.

DSC_5838The tumor was rare and overgrown because of gene mutation and posed a potential threat of turning cancerous if timely intervention was not made. In fact, it was a borderline case of zero stage cancer, making the surgery a difficult and risky procedure.

Thin, undernourished and dehydrated, 70-year-old woman weighed a paltry 38 kgs with the tumor. The tumor and associated issues had considerably affected her food intake and health condition, and her diet had been minimal for the past two years. In addition, the tumor had grown so large that it was touching and pressing against all the internal organs of the body and posed a major risk to them as well.

Once the Ultrasound and CT Scan revealed the existence of the tumor and its location, the doctors at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon started the diagnosis of cystoadenoma of her right ovary and decided to immediately make a surgical intervention as delaying it could have posed a threat to the life of the woman.

“She was an extremely frail and thin woman which is understandable since she had not eaten properly over the past two years. The tumor had grown so large that it gave the patient the shape of a pregnant woman. She was undernourished and weak and her skin was extremely dehydrated,” said Dr. Namrata Kachhara, Senior Consultant, Oncology and Gynaecologist at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.

“We needed to operate immediately as we suspected the tumor could turn cancerous any time. If that had happened, it would have been very difficult to save the patient. In any case, the operation was going to be difficult as the tumor was large and was affecting other organs as well. Besides, the woman was very weak, her tissues were fragile,” added the doctor.

The vital statistics of the patient were observed closely and the surgery to remove the tumor from the ovary was performed immediately as timely intervention was very crucial here. The surgery itself was a difficult one and a lot of care had to be taken to ensure no harm was caused to other organs that were being affected by the tumor.

With timely intervention, the undesired growth was successfully removed from the abdomen of the woman, crucially saving further complication and her life. Following the surgery, the woman lost 5 kgs of weight.

“It was a sensitive procedure and needed expertise and experience. Thankfully, we did not delay the intervention as it could have complicated the matters,” said Dr Kachhara.

After a stay of about 10 days, the woman was discharged from the hospital, weighing 33 kgs. She is now living a normal life and has started taking proper meals.
