  • British Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband was elected on Saturday as new leader of Labor Party.

The five candidates, including David and Ed Miliband, Ed Balls, Andy Burnham and Diane Abbott, are in the running to replace former Labor leader Gordon Brown. Ed Miliband, 40, finally narrowly beat his older brother David Miliband, shadow foreign secretary and replaced acting leader Harriet Harman in the contest.

Miliband said in a speech “Today, a new generation has taken over Labor … I believe that we must do more to tackle inequality. I believe also that we need a different kind of politics.”

Brown gave a speech before the contest result was announced, saying that “Labor is the keeper of hope, the guarantor of justice and now the only progressive party that this country has.”

He said whoever wins the leadership contest will have his “full, tireless and unequivocal support.”

Brown resigned in May after Labor lost the general election.
