  • India expresses regret over death of Indian dentist in Ireland after being refused abortion

    India has expressed concern over the death of an Indian dentist,Savita Halappanavar, in Ireland after being refused abortion.Savita collapsed after doctors in an Ireland hospital refused to abort her foetus on grounds that Ireland is a Catholic country. Later , she died of blood poisoning.

    External Affairs Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin today said the Indian embassy in Dublin is closely monitoring developments in the case and awaiting the results of inquiries initiated by Irish authorities into the matter.

    The National Commission for Women,NCW, said a change in Ireland’s laws was needed. NCW Chairperson Mamta Sharma said that she will take the matter to the Prime Minister. CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat demanded that the government must step in.
