  • International Mother Language day being celebrated today

    The International Mother Language day is being celebrated today. In 1999 UNESCO has decided to observe 21st February every year as International Mother Language day. According to the commissioner for Linguistic Minorities, at least 234 Mother Tongues are being promptly used by large Indian population. Many other mother tongues are also in use but their number of speakers are less than ten thousand. According to UNESCO report there are 196 mother languages in India have been identified as endangered mother languages. Out of these 196 languages, 56 are from non eight scheduled languages. The headquarters of Commissioner for linguistic minorities has organised a day’s conference in Allahabad today. Speaking on this occasion the former judge of Allahabad high court Justice N. L. Ganguli has stressed to broaden awareness for linguistic Pluralism and significance of mother languages.

    According to the last census report, Urdu and Bangla languages are the two main linguistic minority languages in Uttar Pradesh, According to the report about 2 lakh people in Uttar Pradesh have been using Bangla as their mother language while about 1 crore 32 lakh people speaks Urdu as their mother tongue.
