  • JPC asks Telecom Ministry to provide details about 281 licences issued since 1994

    The Joint Parliamentary Committee, JPC, probing the 2G Scam has directed the Telecom Ministry to present complete details about 281 licenses issued from 1994 till now. The second meeting of the JPC chaired by Congress leader P C Chacko, was briefed by Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekhar about the telecom policy from 1998 to 2009. In the first session, the members were also briefed by officials of the Department of Telecom including wireless advisor Ashok Chandra on issues like spectrum and amplification of signals for use in telephony. The Comptroller and Auditor General, CAG made adverse remarks about the migration package during the NDA government in 1999. It was asked to quantify losses and report back. The then Attorney General will also be called before the Committee to depose on the issue. The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere as matters related to the continuance of BJP members Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh, the then Union Cabinet ministers who were part of decision-making in telecom sector between 1998-2008 were declared closed.
