The Number of Players hit 115 Million in 2020

Released in 2009, League of Legends has been growing in popularity ever since and became Riot’s revenue-generating machine.

In 2015, the revenues of the popular gaming title amounted to $1.63bn, revealed Super Data research. By 2017, this figure jumped to $2.1bn. Statistics show that in 2018 and 2019, revenues dipped by around 30% to $1.4bn and $1.5bn, respectively.

However, as the entire gaming industry exploded amid the COVID-19 pandemic, revenues jumped by $250 million in 2020, ranking League of Legends in the top ten revenue-producing, free-to-play titles globally.

Statistics show that League of Legends` player base also surged over the years. In 2009, the game had a few hundred thousand players but quickly gained traction and reached 11 million players by 2011.

In the next three years, this figure soared by almost 500% to 65 million, and in 2017 League of Legends hit 100 million players for the first time.

Statistics show that the LoL player base had a slight drop to 75 million in 2018 but made a comeback in 2020 with around 115 million registered players.

More than 1.5 Billion Hours Watched in 2020

Besides impressive growth in revenue and the number of players, League of Legends also witnessed a surge in the number of hours LoL fans spent watching the popular game on Twitch.

In January 2020, they spent 99.7 million hours watching the title, revealed the TwitchTracker data. In the next six months, this figure jumped to 143 million.

However, statistics show that Twitch users spent more than 1.5 billion hours watching League of Legend in 2020. Compared to other popular gaming titles, that is 40% more than Fortnite and almost double than Grand Theft Auto V.
