  • Palaniswami, 40 years old and a resident of Salem, Tamil Nadu, was brought to Palani swamyRVM Foundation Hospital by a Good Samaritan and admitted on June 11, 2014.

    History and Diagnosis

Since his birth, Palaniswami has been suffering from aggressive tumor growth. At first, the tumors manifested as small growths on his body, which continued to develop into progressive tumors – one on each wrist and one on the right side of his jaw.

Although he was diagnosed with multiple plexiform neurofibromas earlier, owing to his inability to afford further treatment and the high risk involved in the complete surgical removal of the tumors, his condition remains untreated till date.

At RVM Foundation Hospital, after initial examination, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan were performed. The patient does not have any other health-related complications, and the tumors are benign (non-cancerous).

    Future Treatment Plans

At present, plans are being made to conduct the surgical removal of his tumors   a very high-risk operation. The expert opinion of a neurologist will be sought before the surgery, which will be conducted at RVM Foundation Hospital by its General Surgery team.

At present, the main hurdles faced by the hospital with regard to Palaniswami’s surgery are time, equipment and the related costs.

The surgical removal of his tumors needs to be done as soon as possible in order to prevent further complications to his health due to growth of the tumors, which may not always stay benign. Moreover, at present, the necessary equipment needed for his surgery needs to be purchased at the hospital and the lack of funds for the same is delaying the procedure further.

    Instilling Hope

We, at RVM Foundation Hospital, reach out to the underprivileged members of our society – like Palaniswami   who seek medical attention, but are unable to afford any. Even though Palaniswami has to undergo this high-risk surgery for complete recovery, we have instilled hope in him, and he is also looking forward to a better life after the treatment.

For this purpose, necessary fundraising activities are in progress in order to cover the equipment- and surgery-related costs – for which approximately Rs. 1,00,000 [1 Lakh Rupees] is required.
