  • Nepali Congress not to withdraw Poudyal’s candidature

Despite failing to get its candidate Ramchandra Poudyal elected as the country’s Prime Minister for 12 times, Nepali Congress Tuesday said he will not withdraw from the race without reaching an agreement on the conclusion of the peace process.

Party General Secretary Prakash Man Singh said Poudyal will not withdraw from the Prime Minister’s race until an agreement is reached on how to conclude the vexed peace process.

Talking to reporters in Morang district of eastern Nepal, Singh said the first priority was to clinch an agreement to end the political stalemate.

“Details on power sharing, the drafting of new constitution and who will lead the Government can be decided later,” he said.

Poudyal could not get elected as the country’s new Prime Minister in the 12 rounds of elections held so far.

Singh said reintegration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants would be carried out as per the data shared by UNMIN to the special committee. “Nothing is impossible in politics. If an agreement can be reached, the peace process can be concluded within a couple of months,” he said.

Singh also expressed concern over the decline in mutual trust among the political parties.
