  • No decision yet on delivery of S-300 missiles to Iran: Russia

    Published on August 20, 2010

Russia has not yet taken any decision on delivery of Patriot class S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Iran, which can boost Tehran’s air defence capabilities, amid fears of a possible Israeli-US aerial strike on that country’s nuclear facilities.

“No decision has been taken yet on the delivery of S-300 air defence systems to Iran,” Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

Russia signed a contract for delivering at least five S-300 systems to Iran in December 2005, but its implementation has so far been delayed on different pretexts, including pressure from Israel and the US.

The sale of S-300 air defence missiles is believed to fall under the 9th June  sanctions of the UN Security Council on Tehran for its controversial nuclear programme, although Russia has not scrapped the deal.

Earlier, several top officials had said the final decision on the delivery of S-300 missiles to Tehran has to be taken by President Dmitry Medvedev.
