  • Pakistani PM: Speedy Assistance Required for Flood-hit People

    Published on September 1, 2010

Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Tuesday said that speedy assistance is required in the forthcoming rehabilitation phase of the flood-hit people.

“The affected population would very soon require compensation to reconstruct their houses and the government would like to adopt the same effective and transparent strategy,” said Gilani when talking to Danish Minister for Development Cooperation Soren Pind.

The prime minister said that the damage has been enormous but the will and determination of the people to face the challenge is equally strong, according to an official statement.

He appreciated that the Danish government had decided to further increase its support and assistance for the flood affectees in Pakistan and thus has become one of the major contributors in this context.

The Danish minister said that he was convinced that no country of the world can single-handedly cope with the scale and magnitude of catastrophe and hence international community must come forward to help Pakistan in this difficult time.

With more than 1,600 people confirmed dead and as many as 20 million homeless, Pakistan is reeling from the scale of the catastrophe brought by torrential monsoon rains for over one month.
