  • Palestinian PM Call for Establishing Independent State

    Published on January 18, 2011

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Monday called for making a Palestinian state a reality on the ground.

“We have to impose the state as a fact on the ground,” Fayyad said in remarks published by Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency. “The Palestinians must be ready for the birth of the state. ”

A two-year plan by Fayyad to upgrade national institutions to become a component of the state will complete in August, but Fayyad said he does not have “a vision of what is going to happen” next.

The breakdown of U.S.-brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians in September is affecting Fayyad’s plan.

The Palestinians want Israel to cease all kinds of settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem before resuming the negotiations.

The Palestinians hope to have their state on the lands that Israel captured in 1967. If talks remain stalled, they plan to go to the United Nations to seek international recognition of the state, which is opposed by the United States and Israel.
