  • PM inaugurates 10th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Jaipur

    Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has said that in the last session of parliament, Government has introduced a bill intend to merge and streamline the people of Indian origin and overseas citizens of India schemes by amending citizenship act.

    Inaugurating the tenth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Jaipur on Sunday morning, he said that steps have been taken to grant voting rights to overseas Indians.

    Welcoming the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Singh recalled the excellent relations between the two countries.

    In this regard he referred to the common passion of the Game of Cricket and mentioned the name of the brilliant batsman Brian Lara who hails from Trinidad and Tobago.

    Dr. Singh also said that the Government has decided to introduce and sponsor a new pension and life insurance fund for overseas Indian workers.

    He added that the scheme will encourage, enable and assist overseas workers to voluntarily save for their return and resettlement and old age.

    In will provide a low cost life insurance cover against natural death.

    Dr. Singh added that the schemes fulfil long pending demand of our workers abroad.

    Indian-origin Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamala Persad Bissessar is the chief guest of the event.

    Over 1,500 delegates from 54 countries are participating in the three-day annual congregation of Non-resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin, which began in the pink city on Saturday.

    President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will deliver the valedictory address and confer the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman award on Monday.

    Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vyalar Ravi on Saturday said that during the three-day conference issues like the role of diasporas in inclusive growth and their problems will be discussed.
