    Published on December 14, 2010

Russia is deeply concerned with the information that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) enriches uranium, and calls for the creation of the environment for resuming the six-party talks, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a Monday statement.

The statement was released on the ministry’s website after talks between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his visiting DPRK counterpart Pak Ui Chun.

“Considerable attention was paid to prospects for resuming talks on ways of resolving the Korean Peninsula’s nuclear issue,” the statement said.

“The Russian side pointed to the need to create conditions for the relaunch of the six-nation talks on the basis of strict compliance with commitments stipulated in the Sept. 19, 2005 Joint Statement signed by North Korea, China, South Korea, Russia, the United States and Japan,” it added.

Also, Russia expressed its deep concern with the rise of military and political tension on the Korean Peninsula, which has been fed with a number of military exercises, and called for restraint and discharge of the tension on the peninsula.

According to the statement, the two sides also exchanged their opinion on bilateral relations in political, economic, humanitarian and other areas during the meeting.

The parties discussed in particular the border regime agreement and mutual assistance in criminal investigations, it added.
