  • SC defers decision on opening Vault B of Padmanabhaswamy Temple

    Published on September 16, 2011

The Supreme Court today deferred its decision on opening the Vault B of Kerala’s Padmanabhaswamy Temple till the Wednesday.

The Supreme Court appointed expert committee, which submitted its report to the apex court yesterday, called for more security before the opening of the secret cellar.

The panel has requested the apex court to deploy more CRPF troops to protect the temple wealth.

The temple has six underground vaults, five of which have been opened in the last few months revealed gold jewelry and cash – estimated to be worth one lakh crore.

The Supreme Court was today told by Travancore’s erstwhile royal family that the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple’s Vault B should not be opened as the treasure belonged to the temple deities and the treasures unearthed earlier should not be videographed or photographed as it was against the temple traditions and practices.

The application said the opening of Vault B and videographing and photographing of temple treasures to prepare a catalogue was against the traditions and practices of the temple and its believers.

The five-member expert committee empowered to evaluate the treasure of the temple gave reasoning that opening of B chamber is necessary for inventory management and to take required security measures to strengthen the chamber from inside.
