  • Seven people killed in Syria firing

    Published on August 31, 2011

In Syria, seven people were killed in police firing on protesters on the first day of the Muslim holiday that marked the end of Ramadan.

Activists said, the deadly crackdown on dissent came on Tuesday after thousands of people poured on to the streets across the country with renewed calls for President Bashar al-Assad to quit.

The deaths occurred in two southern towns and the central city of Homs after worshippers finished morning prayers marking Eid al-Fitr.

The United Nations says more than 2,200 people have been killed since March, when protesters began calling for reforms and an end to Assad’s 11-year rule.

Meanwhile, the US has imposed new sanctions on three top Syrian Government officials in what the State Department said, was an attempt to further tighter noose on President Bashar al-Assad’s inner circle. Syrian Foreign Minister said, two others had their assets frozen in the US.
