  • In Sri Lanka, Parliament speaker today said that he will accept the opinion of the majority of members that the changes done in parliament were unconstitutional and against the norms.

    In a statement, Mr Karu Jaysurya said he will not recognize the new government until they show majority in parliament.

    His statement came after President Maithripala Sirisena called for Parliament session on 14th of this month, against demands to call it this week.

    Deposed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe in a message reiterated his demand to convene Parliament immediately.

    Our correspondent reports that the speaker’s statement has come as a big jolt to PresidentSirisena and the new government for delay in convening parliament. The speakersaid the prorogation of Parliament was done in a way that denies its ability to exercise its rights.

    He said he could not remain silent anymore on theinformation that MPs were being offered perks and privileges violating democratic principles. Ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe said every daydelay in convening of Parliament is a nail in the coffin of country’sdemocracy. Meanwhile, supporters of Mahinda Rajapaksa are organizing a huge rally near Parliament to show their public support.
