  • Student killing sparks protests in Bangladesh

    Published on October 8, 2019

In Bangladesh, protests have broken out after killing of a university student. A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology student Abrar Fahad was yesterday beaten to death in Dhaka inside his hostel named Sher-E-Bangla Hall. The killing sparked off protests in the Dhaka University campus and many other universities across Bangladesh.

Some students suspected him to be associated with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami. The Shibir is alleged to have links with terrorist group JMB. However, his family strongly denied that Abrar had any link with Shibir. The family registered a case accusing 19 Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders for the murder.

Police have picked up for questioning a few office bearers of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). It is the student wing of the ruling Awami League. Additional Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan, Krishna Pada Roy, told reporters that police are scrutinising CCTV footage and no one would be spared regardless of the political affiliation.

Bangladesh Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that those who are involved in the murder of the student will face action.
