  • Thousands flee Bangkok following threats of deluge

    Published on October 27, 2011

In Thailand, thousands of people are leaving the capital Bangkok after the government warned that large parts of the city could soon be inundated by flood waters.

Major roads connecting the worst affected areas to the north are clogged with traffic. There are long queues at the bus stations and the main airport.

Residents have built cement walls to protect their homes and shops from advancing waters surging from the country’s flooded north. Some neighbourhoods on the city’s fringes were already experiencing waist-high flooding.

The government already declared a five-day holiday to cope with the situation.
