  • Trump, Kim shake hands as second US-N Korean summit begins

    Published on February 27, 2019

The second summit between North Korea and the United States began in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi on Wednesday.

US President Donald Trump shook hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un at the start of their talks.

Trump told the media that the Korean state can enjoy a brilliant future if it gives up nuclear weapons.

In a brief sit-down ahead of one-on-one talks, Trump repeated his view that North Korea had tremendous economic potential. For his part, Kim pledged to do his best to achieve an outcome that will be welcomed by all people.

The meeting today was followed by an informal dinner. The details of either were not immediately released. The talks are scheduled to resume tomorrow.

The talks come eight months after their historic summit in Singapore in June last year, the first between a sitting US President and a North Korean leader.

The denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and ending international sanctions against Pyongyang are expected to be the main items on the agenda this time.

The North also wants increased security guarantees, which could come in the form of a declaration of an end to the 1950-53 Korean War — that ended with an armistice instead of a full peace treaty  or opening liaison offices.
