Navi Mumbai:  Hip and knee replacement has not affected their spirit; they are enthusiastic about life, and can enjoy even at the age of 90; they DSC_7362are motivated to be active and self- reliant. A group of Septuagenarians and Octogenarians are all set to experience the joy of playing “GARBA”. They will bond together to share and learn from each other to lead a normal life even after undergoing complex bone and joint surgeries.

A GARBA night for Joint Patient is an initiative of the newly launched Bone & Joint Support Group at the hospital and witness participation from 50 men and women between 65 and 80 years of age.

“The objectives of the support group is to provide a bonding platform to all our rehabilitated patients. It also offers proper support and guidance to pre-operative and post operative patients with knee and spine problems. Some of the major initiatives of these groups include physiotherapy session, special consultation, investigations and health check-up, and regular sessions on knee and spine and related physiotherapy by experts” says Dr Ruchika Sood.

Support group is a patient driven initiative which will take care of the well-being of post- operative patients. The fact that all people were enthusiastically participating in the GARBA will make everyone believe in the quality of life after surgery. All participant and spectators had a great evening.

This initiative is towards creating awareness around getting back to healthy and active life post  joint surgery with appropriate cure and rehabilitative care. I am sure it will instill a lot of confidence amongst the people who look at having an active life after surgery” added Dr Sood.

Orthopedic surgeons Dr Rajesh Badiyani, Dr Sachin Kale, Dr Kuldeep Tamboli, Dr Amol Wagmere, Dr Atul Kharat, Dr Virendra Pal Singh are involved in this initiative..

    Case 1:

Patient Mr. Raskhabhen Shah, age 82 and mentally active. His knee arthritis was so bad that inspite of all conservative measures his activity levels were restricted. His social life was miserable and he was not able to continue at an activity level he desired. He never considered surgery as an option in view of his age. Also his relatives used to tell him that knee replacement  may not be for him. He happened to attend a meeting where orthopedic surgeon lectured on specialized Knee replacement technique. The concept of surgery with less tissue damage and blood loss, with faster recovery and less pain appealed to him. Today, few years after the operation he continues to live a full and active life. The operation truly added life to years and maybe years to life.

“My painful knees were quite discouraging for me for several years as I had to restrict my physical activity and mobility was also compromised to a large extent. I could bend my knee on the first day after operation and with a regular physiotherapy regime i am now completely back to what I was 20 years ago! Now I am all set to participate in the GARBA evening tonight and enjoy doing the same with my grandchildren at home.  says Shah.

Knee Replacement Patient Ms. Menka Singh Says “We are not a group that will sit idle even if we are post age of 60, when immobility hit me, the doctors from SSD hospital came like God’s to give me new mobile life. I feel motivated and fit enough to compete with teenagers today evening. if we have undergone complex knee surgeries. Yes, we are participating in a GARBA organized by the hospital to show the world that knee surgery make one fitter and feel younger in age.

Senior citizens who participated in Garbha evening organized by Sai Snehdeep Hospital, Koparkhairne demonstrated the world that one actually becomes fitter and healthier with right surgeries at the hands of right experts.
