The infant death toll at B.C. Roy Hospital in Kolkata has gone up to 12. The Principal of the Hospital, Dr. Mrinal Kanti Chatterjee told AIR that one baby died this morning.

AIR Kolkata Correspondent Arijit Chakraborty reports that the State Health Department has ordered an enquiry over the death of 12 new born babies in last three days.

Though the hospital authorities opined that the death of five to six babies in a day in the hospital is not an unusual phenomenon, Dr. Chatterjee said that most of the babies were suffering from pneumonia with infection and referred to the hospital in a very critical condition.

Besides, most of victims were pre-matured-born and below weighted.
