  • 1st session of newly elected Lok Sabha begins; PM Modi, other members of House take oath

    The first session of the newly elected Lok Sabha began with the members taking oath. Prime Minister and Leader of the House Narendra Modi was among the first who took the oath.

    After taking oath, the Prime Minister signed the roll of Members and greeted them. When the name of Mr Modi was called out by the Secretary General for taking oath, Members from the ruling NDA thumped the desks greeting the Prime Minister with slogans such as ‘Modi’ ‘Modi’.

    Cabinet Ministers including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, D V Sadananda Gowda, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Smriti Irani, Santosh Gangwar, among others took the oath as Members of the Lok Sabha. Pro-tem speaker Dr. Virendra Kumar administered the oath to the members.

    Union Ministers Harsh Vardhan, Sripad Naik and Ashwini Chaubey were among those who took oath in Sanskrit. Mr Suresh of the Congress was the second to take oath as Lok Sabha member, after the Prime Minister.

    The panel of the presiding officers, Kodikunnil Suresh, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Bhartruhari Mahtab also took oath. The House also observed silence for a short while to mark the solemn occasion of the first sitting of the 17th Lok Sabha.

    When the proceedings of Lok Sabha resumed post lunch, members elected from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Gujarat took oath. The members include Kaushalendra Kumar, Chirag Paswan, Gautam Gambhir and Meenakshi Lekhi.

    The members elected from Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Karnataka and Kerala also took oath. They include Congress President Rahul Gandhi, NC leader Farooq Abdullah, BJP leaders Jayant Sinha, Manoj Tiwari.
