  • Assam Police busts illegal arms smuggling in Karimganj

    GUWAHATI :Police today busted illegal arms smuggling. Five desi pistols, seven tamanche and 16 cartridges were recovered from the smugglers today. The police official said, Assam Police has busted a arms smuggling gang in Badarpur area of Karimganj district on Monday. The search operation was carried out jointly with border security forces (BSF). During the operation, police recovered 44 pistols (7.65 mm) along with magazine and 1 pen pistol.

    Timely intervention prevented these deadly weapons from falling into the wrong hands! Congratulating the police department, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted to Yash for another major action to karimganj police. It is mentioned here that there is a continuous smuggling of arms in north-eastern India of the country, which is leading to a dangerous situation there. The security agencies of the country are constantly monitoring this serious issue and are also conducting several campaigns in this regard.

    Assam Rifles and Manipur Police have seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition in a joint operation which is suspected to be smuggled from Myanmar. This information was given by the officials. Acting on intelligence inputs, paramilitary personnel along with Manipur police recovered a cache of arms and ammunition kept in a house in moreh, a border town in the border town of Tengnaupal district, Assam Rifles sources said. The seized weapons and ammunition include two M-16 rifles, two AK-56 rifles, two 9 mm pistols, a Chinese grenade, a large cache of various ammunition and nine magazines of assault rifles, three pistol magazines and other weapons.

    The recovered weapons, ammunition and weapons have been handed over to Moreh police station for further legal action.No arrests were made as no one was found in the house during the search operation, a police officer said. There is a huge demand from militant outfits in the North-East for state-of-the-art weapons. Almost everyday, assam rifles, border security force and state police of various north eastern states are seizing huge quantities of arms, ammunition and a variety of addictive stimulantdrugs, mostly smuggled from Myanmar.

    A large quantity of arms and ammunition smuggled, drugs including foreign animals and reptiles and many other banned substances are often smuggled from Myanmar, which shares a 1,643 km border with four northeastern states – Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland, bsf and Assam Rifles officials said. Apart from various Indian States, a large quantity of arms and ammunition is smuggled into Bangladesh and other countries. On the other hand, the State Rescue Team (SRT) of Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Services along with district police recovered 3 INSAS rifles at Wah Ukhera on Monday. The rifles were allegedly snatched by unidentified miscreants on August 15, 2021.

    An anonymous letter claimed on the basis of information that the rifles were thrown into the Umra river, the SRT tram conducted a search operation and recovered the rifles. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to Twitter to announce the recovery. “The State Rescue Team (SRT) of Meghalaya Fire and Emergency Services and District Police has recovered 3 INSAS rifles at Wah Ukkharah seized at Umshing-Mawkinroh police post on August 15 today.
