    Published on February 12, 2012

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan successfully underwent abdominal surgery at a hospital in Mumbai on Saturday and will be discharged in 2-3 days, his son Abhishek Bachchan said.

The 69-year-old actor, who has a history of stomach ailments since his intestinal injury on the set of 1982 film “Coolie”, was admitted to the Seven Hills hospital in suburban Andheri.

“The patient was wheeled into the operation theatre at around 9-9.30 am and is doing fine…Doctors involved in the operation have said there are no complications,” hospital’s spokesman Dr Asthana told reporters.

“All vital parameters of Mr Bachchan are normal. He was cheerful when wheeled into the operation theatre and before going for the operation even visited a temple in the hospital premises,” he said.

The operation lasted for about 2-3 hours and everything is normal, said Abhishek.

“The operation was successful. It was a minor surgery. Today, he will be under observation and if everything is fine, he will be discharged in 2-3 days,” he said.

“Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting,” the junior Bachchan later tweeted.

It the same hospital where his daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby girl last year.

Bachchan has been updating his fans about his medical condition by regularly blogging details.

His latest tweet was from the hospital this morning where he thanked his fans.

“I wish to thank all those that have most graciously sent in their concern and greetings for a speedy recovery. Your prayers shall go a long way in bringing me back to normal and for this I am always eternally grateful,” Bachchan wrote today ahead of his surgery.

The actor has said the latest problem stems from the “Coolie” accident.

He had suffered a near fatal injury on July 26, 1982 while filming the scene with co-star Puneet Issar.

Bachchan remained in hospital for many months at that time.

He was again admitted to hospital in 2005 and underwent bowel surgery.

“Let me just say that the issue and the problem is a legacy of the past in particular the accident of 1982 and Coolie. Subsequent disturbances have all and shall emanate from it. So I should learn to bear it now,” Bachchan wrote.

Bollywood celebrities wished a speedy recovery to the superstar.

“@SrBachchan sir wish you the best. jaldi hi theek thaak hokar aap aa jayein (get well soon)…my prayers and love to you sir…and a big hug… Nasrun minal lahe wah fatahun kareeb (sic),” Shahrukh wrote on Twitter.

“There is just one TIGER in this world. The only inspiration in my life. @SrBachchan have a speedy recovery praying for you (sic),” wrote actor Neil Nitin Mukesh said.

Director Subhash Ghai said, “Surgery is part of life but no one can touch the kind of will power he has. He is passionate about everything. Godwillingly, everything will get alright.”
