  • APD led by Chidambaram visits Tangmarg for on spot assesment

    On the second day of their visit to Jammu and Kashmir, the all-party delegation led by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram visited Tangmarg, in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, for on the spot assessment.

    The place witnessed incidents of arson recently in which six people were killed and several others wounded during demonstration on 13th September. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also accompanied the delegation.

    Another group of the All Party delegation consisting of BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and CPM leader Sitaram Yechury, visted SMHS hospital in Srinagar. The team met those injured in the series of demonstrations in past weeks.

    The third group of the All party delegation visited Hajratbal shrine in Srinagar.

    The high-level delegation on Monday held discussions with various shades opinion. A group of APD met the breakaway Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, moderate HC chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik, at their respective homes on Monday.

    A number of mainstream political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party, Congress, Bhartiya Janta Party and National Conference (NC) met the delegation members. Around 300 people who came forward to meet the APD demanded revocation of Armed forces Special Powers Act, eradication of poverty, unemployment and complained about poor infrastructure.

    The 42-member APD arrived in Srinagar on Monday to get a first hand information on the situation before deciding anything to defuse the volatile situation in the valley.

    Later on Tuesday, the delegation will move to Jammu to hold interaction with various sections there.
