  • Assam Governor visits Bodoland University

    Kokrajhar, Sept 5: The Governor of Assam Prof. Jagdish Mukhi on Wednesday visited Bodoland University in Kokrajhar and held discussion with the teaching and non teaching staff mainly on the problems and availability of infrastructures of the University.

    Talking to Reporters after the meeting, the Governor who is also the Chancellor of all Universities of the state said that he held discussion with the teaching and non-teaching staff and also the administrative officials of the university basically on the academic and infrastructure problems.

    Mukhi said there had been some problems in the university including lack of sufficient teaching staff in every department.

    On the question of B-12 status of the university, the Governor said he have suggested the Vice- Chancellor for necessary steps for this status. He said the Bodoland University required experienced professors for B-12 status and for this, he suggested bringing professors from other Universities on deputation for three-four years after that the university will receive grants-in-aid from the UGC after availing the status.

    Vice Chancellore of the Bodoland University Prof. Hemanta Kr. Baruah said the meeting discussed various problems of the university, including problems of teaching and non teaching staff including academy and other infrastructures.

    It may be mentioned that there are 17 departments in the university but there is not a single full-fledged professor.

    ‘The Bodoland University is facing difficulties in many aspects, especially shortage of manpower. Many departments are running without regular faculty. Besides, there are various problems in the university which are yet to be addressed by the state government of Assam, said a senior official of the university who don’t want to be named.

    “Even after completion of 22 years the university is yet to function as a full fledged university due to negligence by the government, he said.

    Situated at Debargaon, about 10 km from Kokrajhar town, the Bodoland University is the only university in Lower Assam, was meant to facilitate higher studies for students in lower and western Assam.
