  • BJP leader N Biren Singh sworn in as CM of Manipur; Goa CM Manohar Parrikar to face floor test tomorrow

    BJP Legislature Party leader N Biren Singh was sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Manipur today. Governor Najma Heptulla administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Singh at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. Eight other MLAs including four from the NPP, one each from BJP, LJP, NPF and one who defected from Congress also took oath as Cabinet Ministers. Y Joykumar of the National People’s Party (NPP) was sworn-in as the Deputy Chief Minister.

    AIR correspondent reports that BJP is supported by NPP and NPF with four seats each, one legislator each of Lok Janshakti Party, Trinamool Congress and Congress. BJP had bagged 21 seats in the 11th state assembly elections while Congress won 28 in the 60-member House. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Mr Biren Singh and his team on taking oath. In a tweet, Mr Modi expressed hope that the team will work tirelessly towards Manipur’s development.

    Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar will face floor test tomorrow morning. A special Assembly session is therefore convened. After hearing a petition by Congress Legislature Party, the Supreme Court yesterday ordered conducting of the floor test tomorrow. A bench of the Apex Court headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar had said, no other business apart from holding the floor test will be conducted after the swearing-in of the members. In the meanwhile, MLA from Panaji Siddharth Kunkolienkar was today administered oath as a pro-tem speaker by Governor Mridula Sinha.
