  • Border tension: shoot-at-sight orders in Charaipung

    Published on August 25, 2010

The Assam govt on Tuesday issued shoot-at-sight orders in tension-hit Charaipung sub- division of Sibsagar district bordering Arunachal Pradesh following border dispute between the two states.

The order was given by senior minister and government spokesman Himanta Biswa Sarma who along with Tourism Minister Rockybul Hussain visited the area hit by border clashes since 14th August in which several houses have been burnt.

Taking a strong stand against repeated alleged “incursion” into Assam territory, Sarma said the government had taken the matter seriously and would not remain a silent spectator.

Meanwhile, joint patrolling by police of both the states is going on in the area which is still tense following incidents of arson and violence.

The senior minister had a dig at Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who he alleged was instigating violence through the help of NSCN militants.

“Rio should refrain from such activities and help in restoring peace in the border areas”, he said.

Meanwhile talking to reporters during a visit to the border areas, Rio alleged that the Assam government had done little to restore confidence among the people.

“The Assam government should ensure that peace prevails on the border before levelling baseless allegations against the neighbouring states,” he said.
