  • Collapse: CBRI team to submit report to MCD soon

    Published on November 22, 2010

A team of experts from the Central Building Research Institute will submit a report to the MCD soon after a survey of structures in the city locality where a house collapse killed 70 people last week.

A team of experts from the Roorkee-based institute arrived in the national capital on Saturday following a request by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and carried out a joint extensive survey of the collapsed building at Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar along with officials of the civic body.

It is also likely to inspect buildings in other east Delhi areas.

They also collected samples of the material used.

The teams also visited the other sealed and vacated buildings constructed by the same builder in the area.

“The CBRI experts are examining the matter and going into various technical aspects. The team feels that it needs a few more days to study the structural aspects of the collapsed, sealed and vacated buildings as well as the 36 buildings declared unsafe at Lalita Park,” an MCD official said.

“They will continue to study the matter for a few more days and subsequently submit the report to MCD,” the official said, adding, the corporation will take further action after the report is submitted by the CBRI experts.

Sources said the team is also likely to inspect buildings in other east Delhi areas to ascertain their condition.

The basement of the collapsed building at Lalita Park was also de-watered yesterday under the supervision of the experts.

No bodies were found in the basement, officials said.

Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra had earlier said as per the direction of the Lt Governor, MCD will be conducting a survey in collaboration with CBRI to detect the condition of the buildings.

The CBRI team will see if retrofitting is required in certain buildings to make them structurally safe.

A team of MCD engineers and officials went to Roorkee after the collapse incident to discuss the issue.

The civic body had ordered a internal vigilance probe and asked the Chief Vigilance Officer to submit a comprehensive report within a period of four days.

The CVO, however, sought an extension citing the “complexities” involved which has now been granted to him.

The collapsed building had illegal floors and the MCD has been facing flak from various quarters, including the Delhi government, over the unchecked growth of illegal constructions in the unauthorised regularised colony where the mishap took place and other such areas in the city.

The CVO told the Municipal Commissioner that there was need for a thorough investigation into all aspects of the matter, including the issue of illegal construction and he does not want to complete the probe in a “haphazard manner”.
