    Published on May 12, 2011

The Election Commission on Thursday strongly advocated for bringing a law to deal with the criminalisation of politics. Participating in a live Radio programme, the Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y. Quraishi expressed concern over growing number of candidates with criminal background participating in elections.

Referring to the use of money power in the elections, Dr. Quraishi said that the Commission has taken a number of steps to stop this practice. He said, the Commission has set up expenditure monitoring committees to keep a close watch on the election expenditure.

This, he said, has helped a great deal in curbing the use of black money in the elections. Our correspondent adds that the Commission has seized over 74 crore rupees in the elections. Over 60 crores were recovered from Tamil Nadu and over 8 crores in West Bengal.
