    Published on November 21, 2011

The Centre has ordered an inquiry against at least 10 Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) following reports that they were providing funds received from abroad for funding political activities in the country.

AIR correspondent quoting sources reports, the inquiry has been ordered after the Home Ministry received information that funds to the tune of crore of rupees received by these NGOs have been given to social activists to stage protests and resort to other agitational programmes against government policies and creating unrest.

The Government recently made it mandatory for all NGOs and charitable trusts to file details of foreign contributions received in their Income Tax returns along with their Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA) number.

A revised I-T return form has been prepared by the Directorate General of I-T Exemption and is pending with the Central Board of Direct Taxes for final approval before it is notified for implementation, likely from the next financial year.
