Evacuation of Indians stranded in Libya begins today

    Published on February 26, 2011

Libyan government has given landing clearance for two Air India planes per day from today for evacuation of Indian nationals. Speaking to media persons in New Delhi on Friday External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said two flights have been given clearance to operate by Libyan authorities for ten days. He said the country has also requested the Libyan government to extend the flight clearance if the evacuation was not completed within the given time period. India had already chartered ships to evacuate its nationals from Libya and they have set sail from Egypt.

Thousands of foreigners have successfully been evacuated from Libya, while others have hit snags at the country’s airports and ports. The U.S. State Department issued a strong warning yesterday to U.S. citizens in Libya to “depart immediately.” Thousands of foreigners remain at Tripoli’s airport while others are traveling overland to neighboring Tunisia and Egypt to escape the chaos that has erupted from an opposition revolt and a government crackdown. South Asian nations also prepared evacuation plans for tens of thousands of their citizens working in Libya, many as low-paid laborers on construction sites.
