Guwahati : Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on today challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and asked national president Amit Shah to prove that there are 50 lakh illegal migrants in Assam. Addressing the media, Tarun Gogoi appealed for re-verification of the NRC and asked the Supreme Court to give directions in this regard.

Gogoi challenged the BJP government in his statement that there are illegal 50 lakh illegal migrants in the state. He said, “There are not even 10 lakh illegal migrants in the state, which the BJP is claiming, and if the BJP proves me wrong then I will resign from politics and apologize. He also challenged BJP national president and Home Minister Amit Shah to prove his statement. He said the Indian government has incorporated the term “Khilanjia” into Assamese, which is more complicated to draft in the NRC. The former CM also accused AMSU of defaulting on its role in the NRC process.

Gogoi demanded a judicial inquiry into the NRC process, which excluded the real Indian from the final list. He further mentioned that many D-voters have also been included in NRC.

He said, “Many people have committed suicide and many are facing torture, so they need to pay compensation for this. There should be an investigation to investigate the cause of such a large discrepancy.
