Assam will soon have a new Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) with world-class infrastructure on public-private mode. To be set up at Guwahati at an estimated cost of 127 crore rupees on the lines of the Indian Institute of Technology, the proposed IIIT will be headed by the Advisor to the Prime Minister on the National Council on Skills Development, Mr. S Ramadorai. The State Government has acquired 100 acres of land at Mirza, near Guwahati for the purpose.

The Centre will contribute 57 per cent while the share of the Assam Government will be 35 per cent out of the total budget of the Institute. Our correspondent reports, IT major Tata, Oil India Limited and Assam Electronics Development Corporation will contribute the remaining amount for the project. The classes are expected to start by August 2012 and students can join the Institute after class 12.

The IIIT is in response to the Union Human Resources Development Ministry’s decision to set up 20 new IIITs across the country in addition to the existing four institutes of international standard in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Gandhinagar and Delhi.
