  • India crosses a significant milestone of vaccinating over 1 million healthcare workers

    Published on January 22, 2021

India has crossed a significant milestone of vaccinating more than one million healthcare workers for coronavirus, with over two lakh 33 thousand getting doses on Thursday alone. In a tweet, health ministry said 10,40,014 healthcare workers have been vaccinated so far in the country. On the 16th of January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the world’s largest Covid vaccination drive. The number of vaccination reported on Thursday is the highest in a single day. The highest figure before Thursday was a little over two lakh doses that were given on the first day of vaccination on 16th of January. Data compiled by Oxford University shows that India is now the fastest country to breach the million mark, taking only six days compared to nine by the United States.

Officials have credited the improvement in pace to changes in the Co-WIN application that now allows vaccinators to administer shots to walk-in health care workers if those scheduled do not turn up. The app has been modified to allow creation of more session sites, more sessions per site, and change in site location as per the local requirement. Additional Secretary in Health Ministry, Manohar Agnani said instead of daily plan, officials concerned can now plan and schedule the sessions for the entire weak.
