  • India growth story: Wages high, efficiency low

    The average number of employees and their wages have gone up in the country. According to the annual survey of industries released for the year 2008-09 on Friday, the emoluments of the employees in factories across the country increased by over 23 per cent as compared to nearly eight and a half per cent in the previous year. The survey, however, said that the level of efficiency of the workers showed a decline. The survey says he number of factories went up by six per cent during the period taking the total number of 1.55 lakhs giving employment to 1.13 crore people.

    The total invested capital at the all India level grew by 20 per cent with Maharashtra at the top of the tally followed by Tamilnadu.

    The manufacturing units in the country added Rs 5,30,000 crore to the national income in 2008-09, showing an increase of more than nine and a half per cent over the previous year.

    The study has also indicated that the highest number of working factories is in Tamilnadu followed by Maharashtra.
