  • India unanimously elected President of UN-Habitat

    UN-Habitat, an organisation to promote sustainable global human settlements unanimously elects India as its President for next two years; Choses Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu to preside over its governing council; Naidu thanks member un habitatcountries for reposing faith in India.

    India has been unanimously elected as the the President of UN-Habitat, an organ of the United Nations Organisation.

    Since the UN-Habitat came into being in 1978, it is only the third time that India has been elected to lead this important organization after 2007 and 1988.

    The 26th meeting of the 58-member Governing Council of UN-Habitat, chaired by Urban develoment Minister Venkaiah Naidu began yesterday at Nairobi in Kenya.

    The theme of the 4-day long meeting is opportunities for effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda with focus on inclusive, sustainable and adequate housing for a better future and planning and financing sustainable urbanization and integrated human settlements.

    Prime minister Narendra Modi congratulated Naidu on being elected as the head of the general council and expressed belief that he will give his best & contribute towards creating futuristic cities.

    Naidu also tweeted saying that it is an opportunity to work towards a new urban future. He also thanks member countries for reposing faith in India. The UN Habitat promotes socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements across the world.
