  • Measle shot deaths: Post-mortem fails to establish cause

    Published on August 23, 2010

The post-mortem report of the four infants, who died near Lucknow after being administered anti-measles vaccine, has failed to establish the cause of the death following which authorities have decided to preserve their viscera for further tests.

“The bodies of the children were handed over to their parents as the cause of their death could not be ascertained in the post-mortem report. Their viscera has been preserved for further tests”, a senior police official said on Monday.

Soon after being given anti-measles drops in Mohanlalganj on Saturday, the four infants, all below nine months, showed symptoms of a serious allergic reaction and died before they could be taken to hospital for treatment.

A Central team, which initiated a probe into the deaths and visited a community health centre in Mohanlalganj on Sunday, ruled out the possibility of deaths occurring due to expiry of vaccines but suspected reactions due to break in the cold chain of vaccines.

The team is expected to submit its report to the Health Ministry soon, a senior health official said, adding samples of vaccines have been sent to Himachal Pradesh for tests.

Meanwhile, Lok Janshakti Party President Ram Vilas Paswan, who visited the Mohanlalganj area on Monday, said the deaths of the children showed the “apathetic” attitude of state government towards health services.

“The state government is busy constructing memorials and parks and health sector is not its priority”, Paswan said.

An FIR was registered against unnamed persons by the Additional Director health, SA Rizvi in the Mohanlalganj police station area on Sunday.

Five health department employees, including doctor KP Upadhaya, an employee responsible for maintaining cold chain, and three auxiliary midwife and nurses were placed under suspension after being found prima facie guilty.

A magisterial inquiry into the incident is also underway. Meanwhile, Provincial Medical Services Association (PMSA) has threatened to launch an agitation if the suspension of the doctor, who was held responsible, was not revoked.
