  • Nirbhaya case: SC confirms death sentence to convict, rejects review plea

    Published on December 19, 2019

In the Nirbhaya gang rape-and-murder case, the Supreme Court has dismissed the review plea of Akshay Kumar Singh and confirmed the capital punishment awarded to him.

He sought review of the 2017 judgement upholding his death penalty.

With this verdict, the review petitions of all the four death row convicts in the case stand dismissed by the apex court.

Dismissing the plea of Akshay, a three-judge bench headed by Justice R Banumathi yesterday said there was no error apparent on the face of the record and none of the grounds raised by him calls for review of the 2017 judgement.

Akshay was the cleaner of the bus in which the 23-year-old paramedic student was gang-raped.

The top court announced the verdict within hours of having reserved it yesterday morning. The parents of the victim were also present in the court.

After the verdict was pronounced, Akshay’s counsel sought three weeks to file a mercy petition before the President.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that one week is prescribed under the law for filing the mercy petition.
