  • No compromise Over Citizenship Bill: CM of Meghalaya and Mizoram Meet Home Minister Rajnath Singh

    Guwahati: CM of Meghalaya and Mizoram today said that All north east chief minister and government will never compromise with anything that goes against emotion, sentiment, identity and culture of indigenous people of Assam and North East. Meghalaya and Mizoram were the only two states in the Northeast, whose Cabinets have directly opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). Keeping on the same track, Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Mizoram meet the Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. Along with the Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, his nine cabinet ministers are also present at the meeting. If the Bill is not canceled, Northeast will be bound to take a final call claimed the Mizoram CM Zoramthanga opposing CAB and added that all the CMs of the Northeastern states should come together despite belonging to various political parties. Giving assurances, Singh said that he will sit in a meeting with all the CMs of the Northeastern states.It may mentioned that Cabinet Minister and Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Sing vehemently opposed the Bill during a meeting of North East Democratic Alliance held in Guwahati a few months ago in the presence of BJP national president Amit Shah.A delegation of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) led by the State’s Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Friday to express their unhappiness over the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 by the Lok Sabha on January 8. The Chief Minister briefed the Union Minister Rajnath Singh that all the six coalition partners including the UDP, BJP, HSPDP, PDF, NCP and Independents were of the view that the Bill will disturb the social fabric of Meghalaya and the North East by posing serious law and order problem in the region. “The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will affect North East to a large extent. The Bill is against the spirit of the people of North East as this will have serious repercussions and will create law and order problems in the region,” said the Chief Minister. Chief Ministers Conrad and Zoramthanga had a detailed discussion with the Union Home Minister to express the concerns and dissatisfaction of the people of Northeast against the Bill. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told the media that all the Chief Ministers of Northeast should come together to express their concerns on the issue and stand in unity before the central leadership for the welfare of the entire north-eastern region. Conrad said that the delegation expressed their concern over the amendment of the Bill. “We have asked the Centre to reconsider the matter. So we hope that the government will have a rethink on it,” the Chief Minister said. He also said that the delegation has expressed the concern of the various political parties of the region, civil society and citizens of the region. He added that most of the people in the Northeast will not accept the Bill.
