  • North East Trio of Agatha, Rijiju and Teli to be inducted in Modi Ministry

    Guwahati : Three leaders have made the Northeast proud as they are to be included in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s newly-formed cabinet. The trio, MP Rameswar Teli from Assam, Agatha Sangma from Meghalaya and MP Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal Pradesh will be part of the newly formed cabinet. Among them, one will be a part of the Union Cabinet, while the other two will be a part of the minister of states.Lok Sabha MP from Tura and former Union Minister Agatha Kongkal Sangma is likely to get a berth in the Union Cabinet to be headed by Prime Minister elect Narendra Modi on Thursday. On the other hand, inside sources have revealed that re-elected BJP MP from Dibrugarh in Eastern Assam, Rameswar Teli, is sure to get a berth in the Modi 2.0 Cabinet.Teli, who was the sitting parliamentarian retained the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat for the second time defeating Congress’ Paban Singh Ghatowar by a huge margin of 3,64,566 votes.While Teli polled 6,59,583 votes, his nearest rival Ghatowar polled 2,95,017. In 2014, Rameswar Teli defeated Paban Singh Ghatowar by a record margin of 1,85,347 votes.

    Modi and his new Cabinet are likely to be sworn in at a function around 7 pm on Thursday.gatha won the Tura Lok Sabha constituency on an NPP ticket defeating former Meghalaya chief Minister Mukul Sangma over a margin of 64030 votes. NPP is a constituent of BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).Earlier, a senior BJP leader said that the BJP top brass have finalized the names of Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal Pradesh and Agatha Konglak Sangma from Meghalaya to be accommodated in the Union cabinet while process is still on to finalize a name from Assam to be accommodated in the cabinet. Daughter of former Lok Sabha speaker and legendary parliamentarian from Northeast, late Porno Agitok Sangma, Agatha had earlier represented the Lok Sabha from Tura constituency in Meghalaya and became a minister in the former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh led UPA II government. A law graduate from University of Pune, Agatha had also done her Masters in Environmental Management from the University of Nottingham in UK.

    Agatha made her debut in politics in 2008 by contesting and winning the by election to Tura Lok Sabha polls when her father PA Sangma resigned to join the state politics. Later, she contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2009 and was accommodated as Union Minister of state for Rural Development.Ministers from North East have boarded the flights to catch- up the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who will be taking the oath as PM for the second time on Thursday. To attend the swearing-in ceremony, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Meghalaya Cm Conrad K Sangma, North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Ranjit Dass and other top leaders of the party have boarded the flights. BJP’s allies from the North East, especially the party presidents, vice- presidents, and general secretary have also moved to Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi to attend the ceremony.
