  • Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohen received by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the home state of Assam

    GUWAHATI : Olympic medallist and Assam’s Shan Lovlina Borgohen arrived in Guwahati on Thursday morning. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the boxer who returned from the Olympics at Guwahati airport. Sarma welcomed Lavlina to the airport giving her traditional Assamese ‘Gamusa’ and ‘Japi’ and the chief minister said, “Lovlina has ignited a billion dreams with her success at the Tokyo Olympics and set an example for those aspiring to take emerging sporting talent to the world class in rural areas. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma felicitated Olympic bronze medallist Lovina Borgohen during a felicitation programme in Guwahati on Thursday and requested the Star India Boxer to include Assam Police as DSP.

    Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that the Assam government will provide monthly financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh to Lovlina till the Paris Olympics. Sarma further said that a Sporting Complex worth Rs 25 crore will be constructed in the name of Lovlina Borgohen at Saupathar in Golaghat district of Assam.Borgohen arrived in Guwahati with a warm welcome on Thursday as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed him at the airport. Borgohen, who won the welterweight (69kg) bronze medal, was felicitated by the state government in the afternoon. Sarma was accompanied by Sports Minister Vimal Bora. Borgohen is also scheduled to meet Governor Jagdish Mukhi in the evening. However, she will not visit her village Barohia in Golaghat during the visit, but will return to Delhi to attend the Independence Day event, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet olympic medalists. Earlier on Wednesday, Lovlina along with Union minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal enjoyed a home-style Assamese meal after more than a year. “Having a home-style Assamese meal after more than a year,” Lovlina shared a tweet about the same. Union Minister, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal Sir, for welcoming him so warmly and inviting him to a great meal.

    The state government has organized a grand felicitation programme for Lovlina at The Rich Shankardev Kalakshetra at 3 pm, which includes several dignitaries including chief minister and state sports minister Bimal Bora. 23-year-old Lavlina from Assam is the third Indian to win a bronze medal in boxing. With the defeat of Lovlina, the indian boxing journey in Tokyo is over. Lovleena may not have appeared in form in the semifinals but she has made a splash by reaching the semifinals at the Olympics. Lovlina defeated Chinese Taipei’s Neen-Chin Chen 4-1 in the semifinals to clinch her place.
