  • Only-woman coach in Metro from Saturday

    Published on October 2, 2010

Women in the national capital can hope to have a more comfortable ride from Saturday on Metro trains.

As a Gandhi Jayanti gift, Delhi Metro has reserved the first coach of every train exclusively for women.

The spaces on the platform from where passengers will get into the first coach have been marked as ‘Women’s only’ in pink colour at all the stations, a DMRC spokesman said.

With this, Delhi Metro will become the second Metro in the world to reserve special coaches for women after the Dubai new age transport system.

The reserved ladies’ coach will be the first after the driver’s cab in every train.

Children up to 12 years, accompanied by women passengers, will also be allowed to travel in the reserved coach, the spokesman said.

Delhi Metro decided to reserve one coach for women in view of the increasing number of passengers belonging to the fair sex travelling on the Metro.

The DMRC has already placed stickers on the platform to mark the entry to the first coach reserved for women and will depute staff for informing passengers about this.

Announcements will also be made in this regard, the spokesman said.

Women are already excited about the move and say they can hope for a much more comfortable ride.

Ankita, who works in a publishing house, says she does not have to worry about over-crowding from Saturday due to the reserved coach.

“It was very difficult for women to travel on the general coaches during peak hours as every train is jam packed. Now, at least, with the special coach we can have a comfortable ride,” she says.
