Guwahati : Opposition leader of Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia, demands special House session to protect Assam Accord.A seven-member delegation of the Assam Congress Legislature Party led by the Hon’ble Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Debabrata Saikia, today met the Hon’ble Speaker, Assam Legislative Assembly, Mr. Hitendra Nath Goswami and demanded that a special session of the House be convened immediately to debate the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and, if required, adopt a resolution to safeguard the provisions of the Assam Accord, 1985. Mr. Saikia told the Speaker that in recent times he had been calling for a special session of the Assam Assembly to discuss the issue, but to no avail. Mr. Saikia handed over to the Hon’ble Speaker a copy of a memorandum submitted to him jointly by ‘Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill’ and ‘Left-Democratic Manch, Assam’, which requested the Opposition leader to take the initiative to ensure that a special session of the House was held to discuss this important issue. Mr. Saikia pointed out that the people of Assam were disillusioned and angry because they had realized that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was a ploy by the Government to nullify the Assam Accord. It was the Hon’ble Speaker’s duty to appreciate the gravity of the issue and immediately convene a special session of the House so that the representatives of the people of Assam could protect the state’s interests, Mr. Saikia said. Mr. Goswami assured the Congress delegation that he would consider the matter.
