Jorhat : On the occasion of 490th death anniversary of Sri Sri Madhabdev  several thousands of bhaktas from all age group throng to the namghar premises of the Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar which was established in 1528 at the bank of river Diha under Teok Revenue Circle in Jorhat district was celebrated with four sessions of prayer, said Prabin Kalita, the secretary of the Namghar committee here today.

Organisers said that Bhaktas from all over state and region throng to the Bornamghar on the 490th death anniversary of the great social reformer cum saint which has become a great centre for worship that fulfil dreams which certainly comes true to the life and living.

The unique of the Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghar is about the  earthen lamp here, which has been continuously burning since then being religiously refueled with mustard oil by the priests till date.

There is an anecdote after the name of Dhekiakhowa Naamghar. Guru Madhavdeva after taking up the duty of reforming people and spreading the Ekasarana Nam Dharma came to stay in this small and very poor village. He took shelter for the night at the hut of an old woman, who served him rice with Dhekia Saak (a very common wild vegetable , but very popular and with an excellent taste ). The old woman was very embarrassed to have served the Saint guru like this but he was immensely pleased by the dinner. So he started a namghar there and given the responsibility of kindling the earthen lamp to the old woman. That is why the naamghar was later known as Dhekiakhowa Naamghar. The place is inevitably named after the Naamghar itself.

Bhaktas or  devotees gather in the naamghar everyday since years, especially during this holy  sacred month of Bhado ( that lies between August–September), for this month being the Death Anniversaries of both the gurus Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavdeva, Prabin Kalita the secretary of the management committee added.
