  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Yohei Sasakawa for being chosen for the Gandhi Peace Prize, 2018. In a series of tweets, Mr Modi said, Mr Sasakawa is at the forefront of many philanthropic initiatives and individuals like him motivate millions of people. The Prime Minister said Mr Sasakawa’s compassionate nature can be seen in the manner in which he has worked to eliminate leprosy.

    The Prime Minister also congratulated Ekal Abhiyan Trust for the Gandhi Peace Prize, 2017. He said, education is a strong means to empowerment and Ekal Abhiyan Trust is working in remote areas so that children from tribal families get the opportunity to study.

    Mr Modi also extended his congratulations to Sulabh International and Akshaya Patra Foundation who are sharing the Gandhi Peace Prize, 2016. He said the Sulabh International family has added immense strength to the Swachh Bharat movement.

    The Prime Minister added that this is a team that is working constantly at the grassroots level to realise Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of a clean India. He lauded the work of Akshaya Patra Foundation for their outstanding work of ensuring that more children go to school. He said the Foundation’s determined efforts ensure nutritious meals for many.

    The Prime Minister also congratulated the Vivekananda Kendra for the Gandhi Peace Prize, 2015. He said it is doing commendable work towards the development of country’s villages. Mr Modi said, their initiatives to improve education and community service have touched several lives, particularly youngsters.
