  • PMO gives nod to questioning of Puducherry LG by ED

    Published on April 19, 2011

Prime Minster Office has given green signal to Enforcement Directorate to question Puducherry Governor Iqbal Singh over his alleged links with Pune based tax evader Hasan Ali.

PMO’s decision came on Home Ministry’s proposal for allowing ED to record a statement of Iqbal Singh who had admitted to recommending speedy issue of pass port to Hasan Ali.

The Lt. Governor however, asserted that he neither knew nor ever met Hasan Ali and he recommended Ali’s application for pass port on compassionate grounds on the request of Bihar Congress leader Amalendu Pandey.

Iqbal Singh met Union Home Minister twice in the matter.

Home Minister P Chidambaram had said on Monday his ministry was working out modalities for recording the statement of the Lt Governor before the ED.

“The LG is willing to make a statement to the Enforcement Directorate,” he had said after a meeting with Singh.

The ED is believed to have sent summons to Singh after his name cropped up during questioning of a Bihar based Congress leader Amlendu Pandey in connection with recommendation for expeditious issuance of passport to Khan.
