Rajya Sabha today faced repeated adjournments over US President Donald Trump’s claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him to mediate on Jammu and Kashmir issue.

When the House met after the third adjournment over the issue at 3 PM, opposition stuck to its demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in the House.

Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad pressed the demand saying Mr. Modi must clarify in the House. Deputy Chairman ruled that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has made the statement over the issue and the House should move on other business.

Protesting over it, members from Congress, Left, Samajwadi Party, TMC and others staged a walkout from the House.

Earlier, Leader of House Thawarchand Gehlot rejected the opposition demand for Prime Minister’s statement saying the External Affairs Minister has already clarified the issue and the opposition should not obstruct the proceedings.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar termed the opposition ruckus in the House as dis-service to the nation. Anand Sharma of Congress said the opposition is not satisfied with government’s response and the Prime Minister must come in the House.

As members from Congress, Left, TMC, SP, Aam Aadmi Party and others continued their slogans, the House was adjourned till 3 PM.

In the pre-lunch session, the House witnessed two adjournments over the issue following opposition protests.

In the morning, the Upper House congratulated sprinter Hima Das for her outstanding performance and clinching five gold medals.
